ENVIRONMENTAL VALUE

The habitat of the site includes steppe meadows, meadows dominated by halophile species, but also farmland used for intensive farming, communal lawns, degraded land due to salted deposits (not used by the farmers), groves (especially on Buzau’s old arm of land) and river meadow forests. The territory also includes ponds, more or less clogged and watercourses (Buzoel, Boldu, Buzău – whose river bed moved naturally several decades ago).

The wildlife includes a variety of local species of birds (buhaiul de baltă, the red stork, lopătarul, the red duck, eretele de stuf, the common pelican, the curly pelican), but also regular migratory birds (the summer-goose, the white-fronted goose, fluieraşul, the shore-woodcock, the summer-swan, the winter-swan, the brown-headed duck).

VULNERABILITIES

Bird protection and the conservation of certain species in the site pose several risks. The site is vulnerable to the expansion of the agricultural land, the use of mechanized machinery in agricultural practices, the uncontrolled use of fertilizers and pesticides, the grubbing up of broken trees and forests, the uncontrolled cuttings in meadow forests, and the collection of wild bird eggs. Also, poaching, hunting with unauthorized nets or traps, hunting with the support of a team designated to scare the hunting, hunting near nesting places – these are all realities that can not be neglected. For example, dogs accompanying herds destroy eggs and attack chickens. Moreover, the burning of stubble and uncultivated land, as well as the lack of ecological education of locals, are also major risks.

Also, the establishment of domestic waste platforms became an emergency, so in SCI0005, on the territory of the administrative unit Balta Albă, near the Balta Albă and Amara natural reserves, at the initiative of the Balta Albă Local Council, two manure storage and management platforms were set up.
